Customers who purchase products from Thompson can depend on top-of-the-line quality materials that are consistently manufactured and treated to their specifications.  Our plant employs fully automated equipment and pressure-treating methods to produce a full range of products for the railroad industry.  We are licensed to use American Wood Preserver’s Association approved creosote, creosote coal-tar, and creosote petroleum solutions – preservatives noted for their ability to repel fungus, insects, and decay, and to waterproof and lubricate the wood.

Our three, hydraulically operated treating cylinders are among the largest and newest in the industry and provide treating for both air-dried and boulten process seasoning of ties and timbers.  This additional treating capacity gives Thompson the ability to pressure- treat over 2 million crossties annually on an air-dried basis.  Our modern treating system is completely closed-loop and incorporates a fully EPA compliant drip pad and total containment of preservative storage.  Working in on-site laboratories, employees closely monitor preservative strength and absorption of preservatives in all of the wood products that we treat.

Superior processes and preservatives are just part of Thompson’s formula for quality.  Prior to treating, Thompson workers inspect and grade wood in accordance with widely accepted industry standards including the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association, the American Wood Preservers Association, as well as various individual customer specifications.  Our people continually update their inspection and knowledge skills by attending classes conducted by the Railroad Tie Association and other wood railroad product educational and industry experts.

At Thompson, we offer a wide variety of treated wood railroad products based upon your individual customer needs.  Products include: AREMA Grade, Industrial Grade, & Landscape Grade crossties & switchties, bridge ties & timbers (both solid sawn and structural composite), and other customized wood processing and treating services.  Crossties can be end-plated, pre-plated with tie plates, and pre-bored as required.  All products can be supplied in bulk lots or packaged according to your particular requirements and switchties can be packaged in switch sets.
